AASP498E: A Critical Understanding of Hip Hop Culture and its Impact on Society

Understanding Hip Hop Culture: a Critical Examination, with a photo collage of dancing, hip hop records, a newspaper that reads 'all power to the people' and a raised fist with a microphone

This dynamic and highly engaging online-based course (AASP 498E) will encourage students to critically explore Hip Hop and how it transcends race, socioeconomic background, culture, and gender. This course utilizes Hip Hop as a point of departure to examine and dissect various social, historical, and geopolitical issues that affect people of color around the world. The course is taught from a social-justice-oriented approach that consistently challenges students to be solutions-oriented and to step outside of their comfort zones. Black history, African diaspora studies, and political education are also sewn throughout the course’s fabric.
