Earlier this year, our teammate Emily Singer Lucio (the university’s ADA coordinator) worked with Ben Prescott, the assistant director for Gymkana in the School of Public Health, on ensuring accessibility at Gymkana’s annual Home Show performance in the Xfinity Center on April 10-11.

At the performance, Gymkana had an ASL interpreter—with nearby reserved seating for those who needed to see the interpreting. They also showed a film about the history of Gymkana, which included captions. Emily attended the show and said it was great! She said, “This is a great example of proactive measures that all groups on campus can take to ensure their events are accessible to all.”

If you’re looking to make an upcoming event more accessible, we have resources for you! There’s a page dedicated to event accessibility on our Accessibility website, including a recorded training offered by Emily. And as always, you can reach out to adacoordinator@umd.edu with any questions!
