Understanding Hip-Hop Culture: A Critical Examination (AASP498E) encourages students to critically explore hip hop culture and how it transcends race, socioeconomic background, culture and gender. The course  uses hip hop culture as a point of departure to examine and dissect various social, historical and geopolitical issues that impact people of color around the world. The course is taught from a social justice-oriented approach that challenges students to be solutions oriented and to step outside of their comfort zones. This 3-credit course is offered online during winter session by Nyumburu's assistant director of student involvement & public relations, Solomon Comissiong, who is also a hip-hop historian, author, independent journalist, social activist and scholar.
